It wasnât long before those who were in any way involved with the refurbishment of the Mundayne empireâs palace could agree that Diachona had made a prudent choice in the selection of the projectâs overseer. The palace would be Commander Alexander and Princess Constanceâs home as newlyweds, once they, the imminent governors chosen by King Matthias, showed up in the rainy season to fill their positions.
Therefore, Chieftain Greenly undertook his duty conscientiously. He kept the work on a tight schedule of progress, utilizing his sharp attention to detail to see to the specific elements that the prospective mistress of the estate had made requests about, as well as others she hadnât. The men in the Diachonian company who had come to support the work jested about the eye for delicacy they hadnât known the practical and businesslike Greenly to possess, but none of them could find fault with his competent performance.
What did ruffle a few of them, however, was the spreading realization that Greenly, without an announcement made to anyone, had started using his leisure time to consort with one of the Mundaynes on hand for the refurbishment, the lady interpreter whoâd passed the Ring of Will to the king when heâd come to Munda. No Diachonians other than the chieftainâs closemouthed guards had definite knowledge of how Greenly spent his private time away from the estate grounds, but he had been seen taking some walks through estate gardens with the woman in question.
âAre you courting the lady weâve seen you walking with?â the elder by the name of Cobalt asked Greenly one evening during a supper at the palace when only the members of their company were present in the informal dining room they were using.
Greenly, who had known the topic would come up sooner or later, looked around at the inquiring faces of the others at the table. He adjusted the stiff collar of his shirt beneath his vest and took an unrushed bite of his meal.
âYou know the one Iâm talking about,â Elder Cobalt pushed on. âThe lady we all remember from our first reception here. The Mundayne servant with the kingâs ring in her hair.â
Greenlyâs brow furrowed, his head tipping with consideration when he spoke. âIâve found that âservantâ is somewhat of a complex word in this country. Apart from the truth that each of us who aim for greatness must be servants of all,â he mentioned with a meaningful look at Cobalt, âI think that many of those who are or have been called imperial servants here might be called something between servants and courtiers in Diachona.â
Cobalt shook his head, dabbing his mouth with his napkin. âHm. Well, servant, courtier, whatever we should call the lady, weâre aware that she is a Mundayne. Which is why we all deserve to know whether you are courting her or not.â
An amused smile worked its way over Greenlyâs mouth. âWith all respect, Elder, one lady or another I might or might not be courting has never been any concern of yours or of anyone elseâs here.
